Ptychopteridae (Phantom crane flies) of Michigan - Identification

Four species in three genera are found in Michigan. These flies resemble tipulids (crane flies), they lack the two anal wing veins that reach the wing margin as in Tipulidae. Larvae are conspicuous with the long respiratory siphon, adaptive for the stagnant saturated mud substrates of wetlands and stream margins where they feed on decaying organic matter.

2a(1b) a. Wing with distal radial and medial cells with macrotrichia b. First tarsomere of all legs not dilated Bittacomorphella Alexander
2b a. Wing without macrotrichia in distal radial and medial cells b. First tarsomere of all legs conspicuously dilated Bittacomorpha Westwood
