Plecoptera (Stoneflies) of Michigan

Key to the Plecoptera of Michigan

Introduction

This list provides a recent update to the Plecoptera of Michigan, and is based mainly on Grubbs & Bright (2001) and a more recent update (Grubbs et al. 2012). There are currently about 32 genera and about 71 species recorded for Michigan, with at least an additional 12 species likely to be found based on existing records from nearby state and provincial collection localities. Future sample processing and more thorough sampling across the state - particularly across the Upper Peninsula - will undoubtedly increase the taxonomic representation of Plecoptera in Michigan. An species list for North America is maintained by Dr. Bill Stark at North American Plecoptera has been superceded by the Plecoptera Species File, which has world-wide coverage and many links to older literature.

Genera are donoted in bold green; species denoted in bold blue have been recorded in Michigan; other species denoted in bold are likely to occur based on their known distribution. You can use the Find function in your web browser to locate families, genera, and species. Synonomous species (indented) are listed below the current valid species (denoted in bold) with its taxonomic status indicated.

    • Reorganized reference sections, splitting them into references pertaining to sources documenting the occurence of a species in Michigan, and another for works that reference authorship of species cited.
    March 23, 2015
    • Isoperla decepta added to the state species list, as listed in a new publication by Szczytko and Kondratieff (2015)
    • Leuctra tenuis, previously listed, removed in Grubbs and Bright (2001) as the record from Yanoviak and McCafferty 1996 (p. 204), based on nymphs, proved unsupported, and its currently known distribution (and in the updated Michigan list by Grubbs et al. (2012) make it unlikely to be recorded in Michigan. Therefore, I have removed this species from the list. I have also removed a number of other species (Allocapnia frisoni, Allocapnia rickeri, Taeniopteryx metequi, Perlesta adena), although regionally recorded, have distributions from only unglaciated areas and are not likely to be found in Michigan.
    March 20, 2015
    • Paranemoura perfecta and Arcynopteryx dichroa, listed in Grubbs et al. (2012), has also been added to the list. This edit supercedes the edit dated November 04, 2012 (see below) for Arcynopteryx compacta, which is now in synonomy with Arcynopteryx dichroa.
    January 04, 2013
    • Taeniopteryx maura, recorded as new to Michigan by Grubbs and Bright (2001), was based on a prior misidentification of T. burksi, and is removed from the list.
    • Isogenoides varians, previously recorded in Michigan by Needham and Claassen (1925: 84) and Hanson (1943), are unsubstantiated without location of specimens or misidentifications; based on it's known distribution, it is unlikely to be found in Michigan (Sandberg and Stewart 2005). It is removed from the list.
    December 21, 2012
    • Boumans & Baumann (2012) recently synonomyzed Amphinemura linda with Amphinemura palmeni based on morphological and genetic evidence
    • Grubbs & DeWalt (2012) described Perlesta ephelida, found in Michigan; previous records of Perlesta shubuta from Michigan (Grubbs and Bright 2001) are of P. ephelida
    November 04, 2012
    • Beginning to keep track of changes to the web site pages
    • Removed individual pages for families into one long list, families accessed from left menu via anchor redirects within page
    • Updated synonomies per Plecoptera Home Page
    • Added Perlesta ouabache (Grubbs & DeWalt, 2011).
    • Arcynopteryx compacta (McLachlan, 1872) moved to Skwala Ricker, 1943 (Teslenko 2012).
