Aquatic and Semiaquatic Heteroptera (True Bugs) of Michigan

Introduction

Our current state of knowledge about distribution of Heteroptera is generally good, thanks to some good survey work by Abbott, Hungerford and others. Each family is distinctive and unique, usually with only a small number of species, but all characterized by piercing-sucking mouthparts having a segmented rostrum or beak, and a forewing consisting of a membraneous tip and a basally scleritized portion. Their mouthpart morphology is tied to the almost exclusively predatory feeding habitats. Mouthparts have been modified in Corixidae, with many species being omnivorous and having setae-studded forelimbs that facilitate filter-feeding plant matter. The presence of scent glands in many groups likely has multiple and different functions among familiies, and genera, including predator avoidance, secretion of phermones, or the general health of the insect (Cobben 1978).

Much of the information contained herein comes from a still very useful catalog of North American Heteroptera edited by Henry and Froeschner (1988), supplemented by other references and specimens in the UMMZ-Insect Division collection. As of 2008, there are about 67 genera and 424 species of aquatic and semiaquatic Heteroptera in North America (Polhemus and Polhemus 2008), of which of which 39 genera and 126 species documented in Michigan, and another 12 species that may be encountered based on their known regional distribution. Genera are denoted in green; species denoted in bold blue have been recorded in Michigan; species denoted in black bold are likely to occur in Michigan based on their known distribution with nearby state/provincial localities from which certified records have been published. You can use the Find function in your web browser to locate families, genera, and species. Synonomous species (indented) are listed below the current valid species (denoted in bold) with its taxonomic status indicated.
