Tipuloidea - Crane FliesOne of largest groups of Diptera, with more than 15,275 recognized species in 525 genera and subgenera (Oosterbroek, 2005). Traditionally considered the most basal of the Diptera and Nematocera (Wood and Borkent 1989, Michelsen 1996), evidence increasingly points to the Tipuloidea as a more derived nematoceran lineage (e.g. Oosterbroek and Courtney 1995). Literature often considers this groups as the Tipulidae (sensu lato), but more recently workers have elavated previous subfamilies to family level - Cylindrotomidae, Limoniidae, Pediciidae, and Tipulidae sensu stricto (Young 2008). However, an analysis of data from molecular sampling suggests that Limoniidae is para- and polyphyletic, and should be retained in Tipulidae (Petersen et al. 2010).
The majority of species are terrestrial, with immature life stages frequenting moist areas in soil, decayed organic substrates, or plant (usually woody) material. Other species live near the margins of lakes and streams, and are considered semiaquatic, with a few groups becoming adapted to strictly aquatic environments. This list is based on works of Alexander and Stone et al. (1965), and should be considered only a beginning if not outdated taxonomic survey for the state. Determination of taxa considered aquatic or semi-aquatic is based on an interpretation of Rogers 1942 and Byers 1995. Based on literature records and museum specimens, there are 186 species in 73 genera of Tipuloidea associated with aquatic or wet habitats documented in Michigan, although this number is certainly on the low side of an actual inventory. Genera are denoted in green; species denoted in bold blue have been recorded in Michigan; species denoted in black bold are likely to occur in Michigan based on their known distribution with nearby state/provincial localities from which certified records have been published. You can use the Find function in your web browser to locate families, genera, and species. Synonomous species (indented) are listed below the current valid species (denoted in bold) with its taxonomic status indicated.
