Trichoptera (Caddisflies) of Michigan

Introduction

Our current state of knowledge regarding the distribution of Trichoptera in Michigan is improving thorough recent sampling efforts that yield new state records and even new species. Many species still do not have their larval or pupal stages associated with adults, making species-level identifications of immatures difficult or simply not possible.

Previous research by Justin Leonard from the 1930s and 1940s resulted in the first published survey of Trichoptera in Michigan (Leonard and Leonard, 1949). Many subsequent collection and rearing efforts by Justin Leonard principally during the early 1950s, now housed at the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology, Insect Division, and additional collections by others (Pat Hudson, Brian Armitage, Ethan Bright, Doug Bidlack, Ed DeWalt, and Dave Ruiter) added further records to our state's inventory of caddisflies. A new faunal survery of Michigan Trichoptera under the direction of Dr. David Houghton at Hillsdale College has added many further records, and a new publication (Houghton et al. 2018) has since greatly expanded what was known from the Leonards' publication. Based on these efforts and additional literature citations, there are currently about 76 genera and 298 species recorded from Michigan, with another 1 genera and approximately 39 species likely to occur in Michigan based on distributions from nearby localities. Species denoted in bold blue have been recorded in Michigan; other species denoted in bold are likely to occur based on their known distribution. Synonomous species (indented) are listed below the current valid species (denoted in bold) with its taxonomic status indicated. Synonym and literature material information is primarily from the Trichoptera Database Project, a great resource under the directorship of Dr. John Morse at the University of Clemson. You can use the Find function in your web browser to locate families, genera, and species.

    March 27, 2017
    • Reorganized reference sections, splitting them into references pertaining to sources documenting the occurence of a species in Michigan, and another for works that reference authorship of species cited. Corrected omissions and errors in citation and systematic placement.
    March 24, 2017
    • Incorporated systematic changes in Geraci et al. 2010 that places Ceratopsyche Ross & Unzicker, 1977 as a junior synonym of Hydropsyche Pictet, 1834
    March 12, 2017
    • Incorporated further systematic changes in Polycentropodidae as noted in Chamorro & Holzenthal (2011). Holocentropus resurrected as a valid genus, as Polycentropus, as previously understood, was not monophyletic
